Where do you get Filters like Detune and the one that makes things sound 8-bit-y? I don't see those things on my version of Audacity...and dont even see them in Sony Sound Forge.

I think it was some kind of garageband plugin pack. It happened to work with audacity. I know they were addon effects.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
I've been seriously considering using two alternate programs instead of audacity.
I love the interface of this program
Hindenburg Journalist
http://nsaka.com/products/hindenburg-journalist
But I would really appreciate some sort of pan envelope tool (which would make it easy to make actors go from left to right)
This program has the tool I need!
REAPER
http://www.reaper.fm/
I just don't really care for it's overly complex interface...
But I thought some of you guys might like to check them out. They're both relatively cheap (under $100)

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Cool info!
Can you close some of the views in Reaper? SONAR gives me the option of viewing material from a soundboard interface, but also let's you customize and open and close views to see your material the way you'd like. Any option like that for Reaper? Might help to de-clutter.
Thanks again for the info and screen shots!
Also, if you're looking for a cheap way to do pan effects and you have a fade option, you can put two versions of the same audio on top of each other with one panned where the sound will start and the other where it will end, and then fade the volume of one out and the other in.
Before I took the time to figure out what "pan" meant in my software, I did that for pan effects. Yeah, I know. I'm a huge tech moron. But if you can fade and are willing to add a little time to your work, that's a valid route.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
In reaper you basically have a top view and a bottom view. The top view holds the tracks and behaves like audacity or any other multirack program.
Then below you can have all kinds of views like mixer boards, file explorers, etc. And they're divided into tabs.
I'm not saying the interface is bad it's just not mac like.
Hindenburg on the other hand is very simple and clear.
Your suggestion on panning is basically what the programmer incharge of the hindenburg program told me. But I still want the feature. If you haven't found that feature in sonar you're seriously missing out Paeter! It will make your life much easier... trust me

Oh no, I've got a quick and easy pan feature in Sonar. As I said, the other thing was just what I did BEFORE looking into what a "pan" was, other than something to fry eggs in. And yes, starting with "Dark Ritual" it has made things MUCH easier. Almost as big a discovery as the Levelator was for me!

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Okay... so after much consideration I've decided to stick it out with reaper.
I can really recommend it to anyone who wants a free/cheap piece of software that is extremely powerful.
http://transom.org/?p=10801
That link above will teach you the basics and get you started.
Oh and if you want to make reaper look really nice I suggest you check out the themes for the program. I decided to use this one.

I hope this helps someone else

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
I've learned one more thing... if you want to make life easier make sure you download this alternate menu layout...
http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=58672
Really this should be included by default... just makes everything much more readable in the menus.
I've been going through and splicing every line (using the s key)
Jessup has alot of "again"s inbetween each of his lines...
Oh and I think I like this theme the best now...
RADO 4

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Just learned how to do noise reduction in reaper.
Everything in this program is either easier/better than audacity.
I was about to apply noise reduction to Dr. Leed's lines but noticed some weird kind of stereo distortion. I emailed the actress to see if she could re-record. but I bet if I could just turn the track to mono without merging the channels it would sound fine.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Well... good thing I still have audacity.
I was able to split the stereo track of the lines.
Then delete one of them.
That really improved the audio... it almost sounded like the stereo tracks were slightly out of sync. Now the audio is within home radio drama podcasting quality
I probably could've done this in reaper but I don't know how ATM.
Still the cool thing was since I edited the source file for the track with audacity, and then saved overtop of it, when I opened Reaper it didn't skip a beat and realized the track was mono.
No errors, no problems! Applied some noise reduction and everything is good!

That's the story of my mixing life, with only "Sonar" in place of "reaper". All this great technology at my fingertips and I don't have a clue what the crap I'm doing. Sounds like you're doing MUCH better than I was when I first got Sonar, though. I'm jealous! Have fun!

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Thought I'd share this...
Here's my setup thus far...
All the different colors are a different actor.
Also the grey stuff is usally their extra lines... or just tracks that I've muted.
You're looking at about 10 minutes of a scene right there...
Oh and I'm missing the main actress so it's not that interesting to listen to yet.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
Now that I have the lead charecter's lines things are moving pretty fast.
I had to do some noisecancellation and then some EQ adjustments. Then Render the altered project. After that I ran her lines through the Levelator (Thank You Paeter!) It's pretty fun ATM

I started poking away again and discovered that I'm missing a large chunk of Thomas's lines
Sent an email to Scott immediatley, letting him know the situation. I guess I'm on hold again
Edit: and as soon as I post this I get a reply, he said he'd give them to me tonight.

Could be worse. I've had to re-write scenes for actors I couldn't get back to record after realizing I didn't have what I needed from them!
Sounds like Scott's on the ball. A great kind of actor to have involved!

Welll I've got it up to the scene I started on... and it's going great! Then I cam across a gross mispronunciation

I here ya. I generally try to work on whatever I'm inspired to do in the moment to get the best results. Of course, that only works a for a little while. Eventually all that other crap has to get done, too. Grr.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
I was doing some more mixing...
First time I've had to do this, but I needed an actor to just totally redo the whole scene.
They weren't "going with the flow" if you know what I mean
Oh well... I guess I'll work on it later.

Re: U.S.S. Sasquatch First Flight
The actress responded ASAP and did a much better job...
Got to work again and realized there's an entire charecter that we didn't cast!
A certain Captain Grayson who saves the day in the nick of time and then is never heard from again in the story
On the other drama I'm volunteering on there is this guy that would absolutely have the perfect voice. So I emailed the writer of the Haystack story to see if he could convince the guy to just volunteer to do the 4 lines for this production. If it works out the voice will compliment our ship's Captain (fingers crossed)
