Well, I can’t say we found the movie to dethrone Spider-Man 2, but I can say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Mysterio twist (if you can even call it that) was both obvious and expected but I did not feel that this detracted from the movie. I did enjoy Gylenhal’s performance both as a fake hero and a megalomaniac villain. While Keaton was still the better actor in Homecoming, I would say that I like Mysterio more overall, partially just because his illusions are a more interesting power than mechanical wings. One scene in particular was just fantastically creative in its use of them and really surpassed my expectations.
The mid-credits scene was one of the better in Marvel’s history, though I’m uncertain how they will follow it up unless Spider-Man is getting another solo movie before the next Avengers film. It’s the sort of thing you would want to see Peter feel the immediate fallout of, and not as a side-plot in an ensemble film.
As for problems, I’m still not sold on Holland’s Spider-Man having to sacrifice as much as Tobey’s in order to maintain the hero life at the expense of the personal life. The portrayal of this conflict was the crowning jewel of Spider-Man 2 that sets it apart from other adaptations. I also think that the fact that Uncle Bill hasn’t even been mentioned so far is just too much of an elephant in the room. They don’t have to reenact the shooting scene again, but I would at least like some confirmation that something along the lines of the typical origin did take place.
On a side note, there was a throwaway line by MJ about the world moving away from the concept of objective truth which set off the philosopher in me (especially considering this very movie is predicated on the idea that Mysterio’s distortions of the objective truth are morally wrong) but I was thankfully able to get over it by the end.
