On this day in 1986, Optimus Prime died saving the Earth.

I don't remember crying when I saw that happen in the theater, but it was a big deal. I couldn't believe it was really happening. I figured he HAD to come back. And then we moved and I lost track of the show for almost a year because of different broadcasting schedules and never got to see his return until I was in college.

What kind of barbaric age were we living in before video-on-demand?

Yeah, it was a crazy time.
I never saw it in the theatre. Don't know if it even showed here. But I remember hiring it on VHS more than once. There was something magicl, something extra special about this movie that elevated it above the TV series that filled me with wonder. Looking back, I think it was the more epic sci-fi scope, a planet-eating robot. WOW. As well as serious tone. They killed Optimus Prime. They actually went there. And seeing Hot Rod get all messianic and become Roadimus Prime was super cool.

I also remember having goosebumps, years(?) later, watching the "Return of Optimus Prime" episode. Seeing Optimus in "new Transformers" felt like a big crossover event. There was something awe-inspiring to me about the matrix of leadership that was introduced in the movie and also played a big part in the return story. The idea that the wisdom and consciousness of previous autobot leaders, dating back thousands of years, were stored in that thing was super appealing to me.

Yeah, there's some cool lore in the Transformers world. Seems ripe for someone to make it into a live action movie. Oh wait... crap.

I never saw the movie and only learned Optimus Prime died in it a couple years back when The Goldbergs did an episode on it.
But i did just ordered the complete series recently and might pick the movie up soon and was curious if any one knows what season the movie takes place in?

I don't remember, but it should be obvious within seconds of starting a season in which nearly the entire cast of the show has changed. The Transformers movie killed off a TON of both good guys and bad, or completely overhauled them, while introducing a bunch of new characters.

From memory, they started the new season with a big 4-part story. The show became a lot more epic sci-fi in scope after the movie, at least that's how it seemed to kid-me.

was looking through the episode list and there is one called the return of Optimus Prime so i'm going to guess it happens before that.
