Well... I'm a beginner iPhone Programmer.

In addition to programmers we'd need.

    Graphic Artist
    Music Artist

    Beta Testers

I'm a pro web programmer and designer but I'm only just cutting my teeth on developing for mobile. I have, however, created several games already though. The majority of which were done when I was in web school in Flash MX, but I just completed one as a contest submission as an experiment in javascript based gaming. I'm also an illustrator, writer and vocal talent. I know nothing about music though...

I guess the first thing to do is to decide:

    Code:
    Based on SpiritBlade IP? yes:no;

Once determined, the next question will be what video game genre type?
    Code:
    types=array(
      'rhythm'
      ,'platformer'
      ,'Bullet Hell'
      ,'First Person Shooter'
      ,'Third Person Shooter'
,'RPG' => array('turn based', 'action', 'Korean', 'story driven')
      ,'puzzle'
      ,'Side Scroller'
      ,'fighter'
      ,'exploration'
      ,'arcade'
    );

Once we narrow that down we can start thinking about the details of 'what' and 'how'.

I know... corny programmer geek lol

Thanks for the focus and direction setting WuLongTi! I think those are great questions.

I have no preference, but would only suggest that the game genre be chosen to play up the strengths of the creators. In group efforts I always default to plugging in everyone's greatest strengths and passions. (So if you feel most confident about creating a shooter, go with making a shooter if possible, etc.) Otherwise I have no preference on genre. No preference on IP either.

I think it would only be fitting to do a game based on SpiritBlade as a first game since this IS the Spirit Blade Underground Alliance and all.

For game type, the IP lends itself to a couple of different genres depending on what facet of the story you focus on.

You could have a "go left to right and beat things up" type of game by having a character in the spirit realm fighting demons. (a dual stick shooter would work here as well)

You could have a platformer by having a character infiltrate buildings to acquire access codes to something; then a level in a virtual system once codes have been gotten; then levels where the character is in the spirit realm or possibly descending into different levels of Hell or ascending to Heaven...

Could also have an exploration heavy game like Soul Reaver where you must transition between physical and spiritual realms to solve puzzles

Keep in mind though that any games that will be 3D will increase the complexity of the game exponentially, also the required resources. Also a game can look 3D without actually being a 3D game. Like Donkey Kong Country or Killer Instinct.

My personal favorite type of game is Action RPGs where combat is left to quick reflexes and button mashing yet you still level up your characters, equip armor and upgrade weapons.

Hmmn... if we had an Action RPG Platformer with a Realm Transition mechanic where the character could go from one to another in the same level (revealing secret doors maybe or some other such thing) would make our game a bit more unique among the others in the AppStore.

Maybe Paeter can write the story line for said game so that it's in universe, but supplemental to the main story rather than retelling.

Oh, off topic: tons of Crescent Moon games have been knocked down to $.99, not sure how long the deal will last.

I would think SpiritBlade IP would be the way to go. I could see several of these game styles working, honestly. The stronger ones, IMHO, for phone platforms would be the more simple games. For example, I really liked Limbo. It was very simple side scroller, so would work good for the phone, and we could throw in some SpiritBlade RP elements. Maybe have some puzzles in there like Limbo did.

I'm not familiar w/ the game and I can't find it in the app store... :/

I am a big fan of Caligo Chaser and Queen's Crown though. I have several other RPGs that I have yet to try playing... Neutral
I'm a sucker for a sale and a give away so I actually own tons of games that I have yet to try...

Sorry for the confusion. Limbo is a Xbox and PC game. I'm pretty sure it's not on the iPhone, but was using it as an example because of its simplicity yet had great personality and mood.

Aah ok. Just looked up the game on youtube and it certainly reminds me of Out of this world or the original Prince of Persia games. Very cool art direction too.

Perhaps a Skype meeting is in order(?) or a Google+ hangout...

I'm onboard to handle writing for a Spirit Blade game. All kinds of little ideas I've had to cut from the audio dramas!

I'm also in support of "less is more" concerning technical specs. I'd rather make a great version of something less technically ambitious than a lame version of something that shoots for the stars. (That's why I decided to make Spirit Blade audio dramas instead of movies. Yikes!)

As for Skype or Google plus, I could maybe do that. Though my preference would be to just join by phone if possible. Skype always tries to take over my computer and I've never tried Google plus.

A google+ hangout is basically an impromptu video chatroom; but if you would prefer a phone meeting, I can merge up to 5 lines on my iPhone or I could setup a FuzeMeeting or something.

Once we've decided on a direction and have some concepts in place, I recommend setting up a mind map on mindmeister.com I've found that to be a really great way to just get ideas out of your head and collaborate with others to brainstorm.

I vote for Derek Anderson to be in the game unless he's going to be in SB3 that is?

I'm up for whatever works for everyone else. I've used Skype before with good results, but Google+ could work, too. Can you toss me an invite for Google+? I haven't been able to get an account yet...when you hit their page, they're saying basically that the beta is closed now. I'm WhiteBoyDLC (or maybe whiteboy.dlc) at gmail.com.

Also, turns out Limbo is on PS3 also, if anyone wanted to check it out on there. Smile I'm planning to try to do a review of it for the show.

The "hangouts" are essentially video conferencing, so I always assumed you would need one. Not sure though if you can get away w/ just audio...

I just had a great idea for the type of game we could do...

Has anyone considered an Adventure game? Think Monkey Island or Beneath a Steel Sky

I think this would be great because

    A) It would give Paeter a GREAT opportunity to write
    B) It works great on touch screen devices
    C) It's easier to program Wink

We could even get voice actors if we wanted to.

I think I could get my brother-in-law to do the artwork (He's a professional artist)

    What do you guys think?

That would be awesome! I'm a huge fan of the old Sierra and Lucasfilms games I still have my CD-rom of Full Throttle waiting for me to one day install it and complete the game... I should have King's Quest 7 too, but it kept crashing at a certain point and I could never find a working patch for it... Sad

I'd be happy to contribute some artwork as well.
