I haven't seen it, but I saw potential for it to be really cool or really bad.

Not a bad film. Just an "Americanization" of Asian cinema that didn't go far enough west in style. I would have preferred to just watch a full-on Japanese movie.
And for me, often times, movies about very emotionally reserved cultures are populated by emotionally bottled people which makes for little to no drama. That was the case here.
