Your Favorite Candy Empty Your Favorite Candy

    Post  Paeter October 26th 2017, 10:11 am

This weekend I'll be buying halloween candy. Each year I strategically get some cheap stuff (aka, smarties and cheap suckers) and "the good stuff", making sure to give out all the cheap stuff first, but still "accidentally" opening all the bags (to secure "the good stuff" as non-returnable leftovers for me).

So what is your "good stuff"? Whether you buy it for halloween or not, what would you theoretically like to have your personal treat bucket filled with on Tuesday?

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups is number one, for me. But I like to supplement with Snickers. And Skittles are nice, too.

    How about you?

Oooh! I used to LOVE Butterfinger for about a year when I was a kid. Then some switch got flipped in my taste buds. Don't know what happened.

Twix! Milky Way! Snickers Almond (formerly Mars Bar)! Everlasting Gobstoppers! All better with dark chocolate (besides the Gobstoppers)!

I ate a lot of candy as a kid. Don't eat so much now. I miss candy bars, but when I had one in the States last August, it didn't sit well with me. Probably the diary. I gravitate more towards cookies these days, so if I can get a couple of those Oreo four-packs in my bucket, that would be great.

Does anyone like Zero bars? White fudge over almonds and nougat. Do they still make those?

Also, has anyone seen Snickers bars with oats? I just started seeing them here in China. Weird combination.

Nope. Yes, you can still occasionally find a Zero bar.

In Japan, they are crazy about Kit Kat. There are dozens of varieties.

I get Wonka bars from Toys R Us during the candy season and from the sweets shop in the mall in the off season.

...and I'm not an Oompa Loompa, I'm just chromatically challenged...... Very Happy

Is it the novelty of it, or do you notice and prefer something about the chocolate?

Chocolate and graham cracker, what's not to love? Also, I didn't think it was as sweet as other chocolate bars. Come to think of it, the only place I've been able to find "Wonka bars" recently is at the sweets shop, where they sell them in bulk. It's the same kind of candy, it's just not made by Nestle.

We don't have Graham crackers here, but a year or so ago I did a little research to find out what they are. The history is intriguing.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_cracker

The fact that you guys cover them with marshmellow and chocolate to make smores would have poor Sylvester Graham spinning in his grave.

Incidentally, in the original King's Quest game, the protagonist is Sir Graham. If you type "what is graham last name" the game responds with "cracker". It took me 30 years to get that joke!

Wikipedia wrote:The graham cracker was inspired by the preaching of Sylvester Graham, who was a part of and strongly influenced by the 19th century temperance movement; Graham believed that a vegetarian diet anchored by home-made whole grain bread, made from wheat coarsely ground at home, as part of a lifestyle that involved minimizing pleasure and stimulation of all kinds, was how God intended people to live and that following this natural law would keep people healthy. His preaching was taken up widely in the US in the midst of the 1829–51 cholera pandemic. His followers, Grahamites, formed one of the first vegetarian movements in the US, and graham flour, graham crackers, and graham bread were created for them and marketed to them; Graham did not invent these products nor profit from them.

Wow! I didn't know there was such a storied history of this cracker!

Oh man. We bought way more candy than we needed, and the bags have already been opened. Looks like we're set through Christmas with the usual assortment of Hershey's, Mr. Goodbar, Krackle, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and the new addition of assorted Kit Kat bars.

And yet last night when I had just a couple my stomach took a brief and strange turn. Could it be my age is finally catching up with me to steal away the pleasures of chocolate covered happiness?

I guess that wouldn't hurt my waistline. But it might just hurt my feelings.

I feel you, man. I had a similar problem with an Oreo candy bar when we were in the States in August. But I do have general digestive issues anyway.

I think I have now confirmed that it was indeed Halloween candy that significantly interrupted my sleep the night before Extra-Life last year. Last night I had four pieces of candy (unusual for me) to "test my theory". Hours later after lights out I was still awake and mentally drafting an e-mail while lying in bed, which went on for a couple hours.

No candy tomorrow, Paeter! NO CANDY!!
