Past lives seems very unlikely. I think what we're seeing is Carol remembering her childhood, which memories were erased either deliberately or through trauma. From watching the trailer, it looks like Carol encounters MarVell during her service in the Air Force and nearly gets killed. He (or someone) brings her back to Hala where the Kree implant her with Kree genes in order to save her life and this imbues her with cosmic power. The Kree then use her as a weapon against the Skrulls and she winds up on Earth again pursuing Skrull provocateurs.
That's just what I got from the trailer.
I expect the movie will be a version of Secret Invasion, where Carol is trying to keep the Skrulls from taking over the Earth to use it as a staging ground in the war. I'm hoping for a condensed version of Kree-Skrull war from the 80s, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm *really* hoping we get a Hank Pym Ant-Man appearance in the movie, as he was working for SHIELD at the time I think.
I'm very interested to see how they are going to set her up for Endgame. Thanos was originally created to be MarVell's ultimate villain, foe MarVell defeated by using Thanos' own character flaws because he was physically too strong to beat. This has been the pattern with Thanos in the comics. He's too strong to kill. He's too smart to outwit. You have to defeat him morally. When Jim Starlin writes him, it's genius. Of course, the movie version is a bit different, with a different story archetype.
