This story seems to me to be a really good example of preteen fantasy, very similar to Spirit Animals. I was trying to think of other fantasy I was reading at that age, but it's tough to remember. Probably something by Douglas Hill, John Christopher, or CW Lewis.

I remember enjoying the Drgon King series by Stephen R Lawhead. That was either pre-teen, or ealy teens. I don't remember which.

Dude yeah! I think one of those books opens with a guy getting ripped apart by horses! What do they call that when you get tied to four horses and they all run off in different directions?

Wow. That's darker than I remember. But if it's not described in too much gruesome detail it probably still works for the target age group.
Actually, that sounds like a really horrible way to go. We are such a creative species when it comes to imagining new horrific ways to kill each other.
