Can anyone recommend a free (non-trial version) mp3 encoder? It's time for me to update my software and I know that there must be at least a couple great free options out there.

Re: Free MP3 Encoders?
I use LAME - http://lame.sourceforge.net. Many podcasters apparently encode with CBR instead of VBR, but I encode with VBR, which LAME is the best at.

Re: Free MP3 Encoders?
I use LAME and Audacity to convert at the point of recording.
Freemake has a reliable audio converter.
DVD Video Soft has an AWESOME suite of conversion products.
I've actually achieved my best, most consistent results by importing questionable audio in iTunes, setting my conversion options, and converting to mp3 using the iTunes conversion tool.

I've heard iTunes is good, too. I just don't recommend anyone use iTunes if they can help it. :p

Re: Free MP3 Encoders?
Now that I have an iPhone and I use Downcast for podcast management (instead of iTunes) and iCloud for backups. I literally have no need to ever open iTunes.
If I need to play music from computer speakers I use a program called AirServer to use airplay and "beam" my music to my laptop from my phone

Re: Free MP3 Encoders?
My searches for the LAME encoder seemed to indicate that LAME is actually just some kind of "raw" thingie that only works when it's built into software that supports it. (When I just downloaded LAME by itself I got a bunch of files that don't do anything by themselves.)
I've downloaded and tried a few such programs and am so far impressed by "freac". Any opinions? I'll look into these other suggestions, too. Thanks so much!

I don't like i-tunes. Much like Skype, it seems to think it is more awesome than it is and wants to take over every function in my entire computer.

That's Steve's true legacy, all software and devices that append the letter "i" in front of it's name/type/purpose will eventually take over the world. Forget Skynet, the end comes by a stupid fruit.
