What movies should everyone see
What are some movies you think everyone should see before they die?

I'm losing Geek Cred on this one, but:
1. Babe - the little pig movie. Simply amazing.
2. Anne of Green Gables (part 1 and 2). Absolutely nothing happens and it is utterly riveting.
Oh, and the Dark Knight Trilogy, LotR, The Prince of Egypt, The Gospel of John (the sound track alone is awesome!), Donnie Darko (NOT the director's cut)...
I'm sure plenty of others...

Nerd stuff: The Day the Earth Stood Still (classic), The Wrath of Khan, Planet of the Apes (classic).
Non-nerd stuff: The Caine Mutiny, Bridge of the River Kwai, Airplane!, The Great Escape, the first Pirates of the Caribbean, Blackhawk Down, Kung Pow, Band of Brothers (not really a movie, but still a great miniseries).
...I may have a slight military bias...

Dude, Kung Pow:Enter The Fist is TOTALLY nerd comedy gold! Have you watched it with the storybook narrator audio yet? I used to own that movie and then ran out of people to show it to. i may have to track down a copy again.
For me, Superman: The Movie, Man Of Steel, The Matrix Trilogy, Frequency, Big Fish... and that's all I got for now.

Haven't seen DARK CITY, but why have a derivative when you can have the original?

Re: What movies should everyone see
Geeky stuff
Avatar, of course.
Pacific Rim
The new Star Trek movies
... and I won't mention all the obvious ones, like SW, LotR, and many (though not all) of the recent superhero flicks.
"Normal" stuff
The Raid (let's say 1 minute of romance, 99 minutes of mayhem. GREAT martial arts action, and not for the weak-hearted mind you. One of my 2013 top ten movies (that is, that I watched in 2013)
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - absolutely brilliant movie, with dame Judy Dench.
All of the Fast & Furious movies
Schindler's List
The Passion of the Christ
Jesus Christ Superstar (which imho is even better than The Passion)
Well, etc. I guess...
I loved Babe too!!! Great movie. Now I'm curious about Anne of Green Gables, will check that out.

We own all of those TV miniseries. Holly's a big fan. But her top pick would be the A&E Pride And Prejudice. Which reminds me that "Austenland" is a great, off the wall, geeky "non-geek" comedy that geeks will totally enjoy with their Jane Austen loving companion. The premise is an uber Jane Austen fan attends a resort populated by actors simulating the worlds of Jane Austen. (Like LARPing Pride and Prejudice!)

Re: What movies should everyone see
Here is my quick list off the top of my head:
The Terminator
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
The Incredibles
Monsters Inc.
Toy Story
Inception
Sherlock Holmes (The RDJ/Jude Law one)
Jurassic Park
Ones like Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are considered classics and many would say they are Must See films, but I didn't care for them.

Is a scripted movie or a documentary?

Re: What movies should everyone see
Here comes my car geek answer:
The Italian Job (1969). It's possible that's a British thing too though.
and Bullitt, which definitely isn't a British thing.
Surely The Matrix has to be a must see geek movie? Unless you really hate Keanu, of course...

Keanu is kinda' like Michael Sara, Jesse Eisenberg and Seth Rogen, in that he only playes one character no matter what movie he is in. Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

Re: What movies should everyone see
Okay,
I'm going to go Waaaaayyyyyy back here.
I already mentioned METROPOLIS, so I'll add in THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, NOSFERATU THE GOLEM (gotta love German Expressionism), the Lon Chaney films PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, and the D. W. Griffith film THE BIRTH OF A NATION (keep in mind that there is some very racially-charged scenes here. It is a product of its time, and its value lies in the filmmaking techniques, and not in any way the story). I realize that these are all silents, and that might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they are considered classics for very good reasons.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY yet. I know that again story-wise it can be very consfusing to follow, but it is a visually stunning film, with no CGI present (a bonus for Paeter).
CITIZEN KANE
The Thin Man Series, with William Powell and Myrna Loy
PSYCHO
STAGECOACH
THE MALTESE FALCON
CASABLANCA
BRINGING UP BABY
HIS GIRL FRIDAY.
I have a head cold, and that's all I can remember right now, but I think its a good start.

Re: What movies should everyone see
OK How is it no one mentioned Back to the future trilogy, the Indiana Jones trilogy (crystal skull does not exist) and the James Bond series?
I'm also going to add Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "road to" series especially Morocco, Utopia, and Bali
ET
Paleface and Son of Paleface (both also stared Bob Hope)
Elf
and the MCU movies

Re: What movies should everyone see
I did see that one. Very strange. Definitely not mainstream. Was it a good film? I liked it okay. Not for everyone, but worth the time if you enjoy that kind of indie, avant-garde film-making.rossmcclure4 wrote:Has anyone here seen "Six-String Samurai"?
