This is what happens when I'm not paying close enough attention! What a nifty forum I've discovered! Hello, Paeter, and everybody else.

If there is any uncertainty about which Kris this might be, I'll just say two words, and leave it at that:

    Doctor Who.

    Hey Kris!

(Kris is an old friend of mine and one of the most hard core Doc Who fans I know.)

I'm almost positive you'll find some like-minded folks if you start a Doctor Who topic on the "Fan Zone", Kris.

Great to see you here, bro!

I was a fan of Who back when it only came on the PBS channel. Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, John Pertwee. Laughing

Welcome to the forum, I look forward to getting to know you.

Very nice! Peter Davison was the first Doctor I watched regularly when I was really young. Later I watched the greatness of Tom Baker, naturally. I couldn't appreciate Jon Pertwee when I was younger because of an attention span that was too short; as an adult I've really grown fond of his era and portrayal of the Doctor.

Nice to meet you Kris! Why is it Desert Kris? Do you live in a desert, or are you just fond of them? I have never seen a desert :(

It's 'cause I live in a desert valley. It's also kind of a play on stuff from Frank Herbert's Dune that goes like this: Arrakis. Dune. Desert Planet. At one point in the book, the main character reflects on himself as a creature, and I thought "Desert Creature." Then I came up with Desert Kris. It's a bit abstract, I'll admit, but that's how my tangential thinking led me to it.

That was too much information. Shocked

Ah I see. I’ve read the first 3 of the Dune books, so the way you derived it does make sense to me. Smile There is something oddly appealing about deserts, at least on TV and in fiction. Laughing I’d like to visit one, even though I know I probably wouldn’t last long in any kind of serious desert heat.

Yeah, a desert setting really looses it's appeal when the air conditioning isn't doing the job well. Only the first three Dune books? So many people I talk to don't venture further than that...maybe it's the nature of the protagonist. I have a hard time convincing people that there's a rather touching love story going on with the God Emperor in that fourth chronicle. geek

It’s been several years, I don’t fully remember the reason I decided not to continue with the series. I do remember liking the first book a lot, and not liking the second and third one quite as much. If I remember correctly the religious elements of the series were beginning to make me a little uncomfortable too. I did admire what a rich universe Dune had.
