Are you looking for an actual book recommendation or a suggested process or Bible-reading plan?

Re: Devotional suggestions
In that case a great place to start would be a modern adaptation of "My Utmost For His Highest" by Oswald Chambers. That guy was operating on a level of spiritual maturity that blows my mind and yet I've found myself able to connect with it throughout various stages of my own development. Each entry has something most anyone can apply to their day, but also contains a lot of richness and depth in a single small page of content. Each entry also includes scripture references that can serve as parallel reading. Great stuff.

Re: Devotional suggestions
Personally, I read through books of the Bible. But I have a friend who is currently reading through Charles Spurgeon's Morning and Evening devotional. He really likes it.

Re: Devotional suggestions
A newer devotional that I've enjoyed reading is "New Morning Mercies" by Paul David Tripp.
Although in full disclosure, I have yet to actually complete a full week, much less a year of any devotional.
