CBS / Paramount have released the very first image from the up-coming Star Trek Prodigy show.
Here's the premise
"Star Trek: Prodigy is about a group of alien kids who commander a seemingly abandoned Starfleet vessel. Today Paramount+ revealed the first look at the all-alien bridge crew from the show. Prodigy will also feature the return of Kate Mulgrew, reprising her Star Trek: Voyager role as Kathryn Janeway."
And these are our new Star Trek lead characters.
So...um......that's a thing.
It's a shame none of these kids are from a known Star Trek species, but I guess the medium of animation has allowed them to get a bit more alien than just putting planstic on people's foreheads.
I'm deffinately getting a cutsey comedic vibe from the visual style of these characters. I guess that's what the kids are into these days. But thinking back, even when I was a kid, I preferred a more serious darkertone in my cartoons.
I knew from the beginning that I wasn't going to be in the target audience for this show, so I need to filter all my expectations through that. Still......these guys are now part of Star Trek canon, and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
But this is just a still image. We haven't seen any performances yet.
Interesting that they have not yet released what their animated Janeway looks like. I'm curious to see that, but ... slightly nervous.
The other big news is that the show will not show in Nikelodean first, as originally planned. It will air on Paramount+ (CBS ALL Access new name) first and then go to Nikolodean after that.
I'll still watch this show when I can, because ... it's Star Trek. But I have no illusions it's going to my "my" Star Trek.
