Top 5 Sci-Fi Anime List Empty Top 5 Sci-Fi Anime List

    Post  jorowi April 11th 2014, 12:59 pm

I found this list at Anime Vice and thought I would share it here. I've seen every one of these titles except Galaxy 999 which, for some odd reason, I've never found the time to watch. The only titles I'd add to this list (besides Cowboy Bebop) are Attack on Titan and Steins;Gate. That would make it a top 8 and there's 2 others I would have to struggle to add to make it a top 10 because I've watched a lot of anime since the 80s.

    What shows would you add?

Are we talking series or movies? This seems to be a bit of both.
My own essential anime list includes:

Outlaw Star - A great sub-theme on the nature of the soul contained in the hunt for the Galactic Ley-Line.

Cowboy Bebop - Noir space opera without compare.

Dragonball Z - Not just an action fest. The structure of the universe and the nature of heroism leads to great depths of discussion.

Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team - War story, crossed with Romeo and Juliet.

Gundam Wing - Explosive action and a take on global politics that actually makes sense.

Witch Hunter Robin - A little bit X-Files and little bit X-Men.

No anime list is complete without the Gatchaman series! (Gatchaman, Gatchaman II & Gatchaman F)

Says me, a would-be Jun (*sigh*)

Speaking of anime, I'm interested in getting reviews of anime movies and series that are available to watch 100% legally free. I've noticed Hulu.com has a fair amount of anime shows and movies. Would any of you be interested in checking to see if a favorite of yours is there and then consider writing or recording a review as a "Summer Of Free" segment for the SBU podcast?

I'm not generally a fan of anime, but I saw a trailer for an anime web-series that I thought looked kinda' cool. It is called RWBY.

I haven't checked it out yet, but here is the link to the series:

I have a hulu account, but since we pay for it, I'm not sure what I would see that someone viewing hulu free versions wouldn't.

but I will snoop around hulu using a different computer and see what's in the anime section for possible review.

I've actually watched this series. It's pretty good. It's made by the same folks who do Red vs. Blue. They always put out good quality work.

I'd say the character building in this is about average and the action scenes are above average.

As for my Top 5 Anime of all times:

    1. Cowboy Bebop
    2. Yu Yu Hakusho
    3. Naruto/Naruto Shippuden
    4. Full Metal Alchemist
    5. Ghost in the Shell S.A.C./Bleach/DBZ/R.O.D. Read Or Die (OAV)

HM's go to Neon Genesis Evangelion and Witch Hunter Robin.

(Yeah, i probably could make a top 10 but i can't leave off some of my favorites!)

    No Robotech in there anywhere?
(okay, probably not, but it is still my favorite)

LOVE Robotech, but it never came to mind. And I bought the whole series on its initial DVD release. I just never considered it to be ... anime. Which is really odd. Robotech is something I came to before I really knew that anime was a thing. It's not some foreign cartoon. It's MY cartoon.

I would have said Macross, not Robotech. Robotech (which was Harmony Gold's acquisition of Macross) is a cartoon I grew up with, but didn't consider it anime, for the same reasons as mindspike.

I was able to watch the series as Macross, in the Japanese with subtitles, in college, and really enjoyed it about as much as I did the English translation. Even got o watch MOSPEDIEA, also known as Robotech: The Invid Invasion.

    I would add Last Exile.

Otherwise, I'm with those of you who put Mobile Suit Gundam (UC) on their list. Cowboy Bebop, of course. I just finished Attack on Titan. Not my favorite, but I was definitely enthralled by it.

Just watched the Last Exile trailer. That animation looks amazing! Thanks for the recommendation!

No problem. In recommending it, I've now discovered Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing is now out dubbed. That would be the sequel! Now I'm excited too!

Since starting this thread I've seen Knights of Sidonia and it blew me away! It's currently available on Netflix so you should check it out if you have a subscription. You'll need to enable subtitles in the video below.
