Oddly enough, in heavily stylized movies like 300, Ultra Violet and Sky Captain I can let go of some of my issues. Of those three I still only really love 300, but not because I think it's backgrounds look more "real".
The story behind Superman 4 is an interesting one. I highly recommend listening to the commentary for that flick, provided by the screenwriter, as he talks about what the script intended and what everything had to be shaved down to visually because of the budget.
