Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer
Other than the gag at the end with Sonic in the bag, the only thing I really liked in this trailer is Jim Carrey. He looks great, but the rest seems very meh to me. This didn't pleasantly surprise me like the Detective Pikachu trailers did.

I personally think the design of Sonic is kind of gross-looking. And Jim Carrey seems to be just pulling out his 90's schtick rather than trying to be Dr. Robotnik. Were Sonic fans even asking for a live action movie? Seems like an animated feature similar to the style of Into the Spider-Verse would be more suitable.

Lol! This trailer has definitely been getting some negative buzz, so I'm apparently in the minority in my movie preferences... again!

I like the juxtaposition of cartoony characters (sonic and Robotnik) in an otherwise grounded world, that reacts to them as you might expect normal people would. The military guy is trying to calmly deal with this bonkers scientist. And James Marsden screaming and tranqing sonic made me laugh out loud at the psychological realism of that moment.
It's taking these kid-show like characters and dropping them into a pseudo-realistic world, which makes some of the resulting humor just a little bit dark. Like the final gag where Marsden says he has a child in his duffle bag, but it's not his own.
Other jokes definitely missed for me, but with my tastes in humor I'm used to that. What makes it special is the jokes that did land for me, which is unusual and something I appreciate when it happens.
They are also clearly channeling the visual style and speed gimmicks of The Flash, which I dig, even though I'd rather have that Flash movie.

A coupe Photoshoppers whipped these up.

The original design disgusts me (and that's not very hyperbolic), but if the character looked like these edits in the final cut, I'd be much more interested. If you're going to have a cartoon character interact with real people, just let him look like a cartoon.

Paeter sadly droops his head, reminded of his cursed eyes:
"All CG looks like cartoons to me..." (Sniff)

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer
Yeah, I heard about that yesterday! Wow! I get the impression that the negative reaction has been from fans of Sonic, which I am not. So for their sake, this is really cool news and I hope they get to enjoy the film more now!

I don't understand why they chose that character design. Just keep the original character design.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer
I. Want. This. Movie.
I'm willing to give Carey a shot as Eggman, mostly because of the clip at the end of the trailer that shows him finally in his bald-goggled glory.
I'm willing to live with the character design if the movie makes it worthwhile. I once swore that I hated the look of every character on The Batman (2004) and I even came to really appreciate that series.
But, dude. Sonic. I want this.

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer
That looks utterly ridiculous.
But then, I'm the guy who writes novels based on 80s computer games, so it's my kind of ridiculous - I'm in too!

Re: Sonic The Hedgehog Trailer
The fans have been heard. Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a makeover before the movie gets released.
Changes Are Coming to Sonic
I guess we have to wait and see if the changes are an improvement, but one fan did a quick photoshop of the character without any difficulty. In an all-digital, mathematically rendered production like this, I would think that changing the parameters of the design would allow that element to be replaced without causing problems. Guess we'll find out.
A fan-made twitter post.

If it were me, I probably would have chosen the same design. My thinking is that if you're going to put a character into a live action setting with human actors, it needs to have more realistic proportions and be less stylised. But I'm just not a fan of stylised animation in general.
Anyway, I wouldn't consider myself a Sonic fan, so my opinions are pretty unimportant in this context. I'm happy for the fans that they have been heard.
The big lesson here is that you really need to understand your fanbase when adapting a beloved property. Clearly the people behind this movie did not.
