Venom Teaser Trailer

Here it is, the movie about a Spider-Man character detached from Spider-Man. Not a lot of plot details in the trailer, but it looks like science might be more involved than aliens. Could be similar to the Venom origin from the Ultimate universe. Or it could be more like Agent Venom.

Meh.

It's gotta be better than Spiderman 3. I hear their original plan for that was to have Mary Jane's jilted fiance go up into space on a NASA mission and accidentally bring Venon back to earth. That would have at least been more interesting than "black slime drops out of sky and splats on the ground".

If I were making a Venom movie I'd go deep on the sc-fi. Really pull out the wonder of having this mysterious alien symbiote. Of course, in a universe that already has established aliens, that wonder would be somewhat diluted.
I'm assuming this will be set in the MCU just like Homecoming.

From what I've read, it will technically be a part of it, but there won't be any interaction with the MCU characters we already know, including Spider-Man. Maybe along the lines of the Netflix series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones - they'll mention "the Battle of New York" and "the big green guy," but those'll just be like Easter eggs.

That would feel weird to me. I thought the reason the Symbiote suit has eyes similar to spider-man's and shoots webs like spider-man is because he spent time on spider-man, conforming himself to spider-man's needs. I guess the mask could still work, but if this Venom shoots webs or even swings around on strings of black goop, I think they need to have some kind of connection to Tom Holland's Spider-man, even if just a brief encounter after which the symbiote "mimics" some of spider-man's abilities.

There aren't many things I'm a purist about but for some reason I am when it comes to Venom's origin. Maybe it's because I really want to see a Secret Wars movie based on the 80s series. I read those books over and over!

Yeah, I'd be down for that! As an old-school DC fan I have to point out that DC invented the mega-universe-altering-crossover with "Crisis On Infinite Earths". But Marvel is FAR better positioned to get there first in the movies. And what I know of Secret Wars makes it sound really cool!

But at this point I think they've committed to a version of the Infinity Gauntlet story, so they'd probably have to wait longer than they'd want to ramp up again to something like a Cinematic Secret Wars.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this origins story!

Secret Wars started in '84. It finished the same month Crisis on Infinite Earths started.

Yeah, that's true I think. I guess Marvel may have just beaten them to a universe-wide crossover. Thanks for the correction!

On a few notes of trivia, it was actually Batman & Superman followed by the Justice Society that invented the superhero crossover (and there were several "Crisis" crossover events years before "Infinite Earths"). The truly groundbreaking thing about Crisis On Infinite Earths was that it brought together MULTIPLE universes all published under DC and then radically altered continuity by combining them into a single universe as a result of that crossover story.

Wait, fact-check me on this. It's possible a pre-Marvel Submariner might have appeared with another pre-Marvel character as the first superhero crossover before Batman and Superman met in a story. Crap, where is that paper I wrote in college...
